Hello everyone, I believe I am posting this on the right page. I am about to adopt a Meyers Parrot that was taken out of a really bad hording situation. He was living with over 700 other birds before he was rescued, needless to say he did not get very much attention. He has been in foster care for several months now and is doing much better. He has become a lot more social and has regained his health. Although he is still nervous about getting out of his cage and is still a bit shy, understandably of course. I have never owned a Meyers Parrot before and know only what I have read about them. I would love to hear any suggestions on how we can help him come out of his shell, as well as different things they like to do. I figured we would just open his cage and let him come out on his own time and when he does give him a treat to reinforce the behavior. Anyways I would love to know any ideas that you may have. Thanks!

Wow, only 700 birds! EEEKKK! That is great that you are going to help this bird out. I have not ever had a Meyers or have not known any personally. I hear they make nice pets though. I's sure with some time and lots of patience you may get hime to become more friendlier over time... maybe.
Hope to see some pics of him soon!

We sing to our bird, and the good news is, it really helps when she is stressed or reluctant to do something. The bad news is, only one of us can sing, and it isn't me!

I love the poicephalus parrots, especially the Meyers. They're supposed to be pretty good talkers. There was one at a bird store here that I swear could hold a conversation with you! Very chatty with a huge vocabulary. Wow - 700 birds is HUGE! I can't even imagine what that must have looked like. Sad.

Having 700 birds is insane (IMHO) and congratulations to you for getting the Meyers. When will you get him? I would do the same: just open the cage and let him come out on his own schedule with treats for positive reinforcement. Best wishes!

I would sing too Momazon! Also reading aloud to a bird can be good if they're timid.

We got him a couple of weeks ago and he is doing great! He is much sweeter than I thought he was going to be, but he still not nuts about getting out of his cage. He will only come out for a treat, to see Doodle, my Pionus, and he seems to love men, especially my dad when he comes to visit. We have named him Ivan and Ivan is a very good little talker.

WOW, Sorry I missed this the first time. Congrats on the new fid. Glad he's responding so well to the treats. It sounds like he's off to a good start. A little patience, good food & love & he will start to trust you more & more. Ivan is a cool name. SO Happy for you!!

That is great! So where is the photo of him? Just give him time to adjust and work with him day by day, he'll probably get better at coming out of his cage.

how does your Pionus get along with your Meyers? I have my W.C. Pionus and he is very attached to me and me only.
